How the Thai Labor Market Goes?: Evidences from the Job Seeker Survey

The job seeker survey, conducted by Adecco-Thailand, aims collecting the data on the behavior of job seekers classified such as by type of improper resume; media use to seek job, expected salary, decision factors to change jobs, working duration in a company in 2009, etc. From around 465 respondents, 62.1 percent of them find job by applying through website, 28.4 percent of them find job by directly applying to the company, and 16.8 percent find job by applying through career agencies.

The survey also reports that all range of gender; education and age have a strong tendency to use online media to search for jobs. Those with education lower than bachelor degree and/or older age between 41-45 years, however, still consider the use of printing media. Nevertheless, among those respondents, there were as high as 65.4 percent accepting themselves outsource temporary, or contract workers rather than full-time staff.

The most important factor to accept a job is they find that job is interesting (47.8 percent), followed by the reasons of high compensation (35.5 percent), well-known company (20.6 percent) and closer to home place (11.6 percent) respectively.

Nevertheless, the survey also shows a very interesting point in term of worker’s preference. As high as 83.4 percent, especially female, of respondents preferred being business owners rather than continue working as full-time employees (16.7 percent). This result of preferring to be business owners rather than employees should support the reasons why, first studying in hard fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or so called STEM field, do not receive much interest among college students comparing to soft fields such as social science and business administration. Those who dream being business owners will choose studying business administration in which they believe to apply those business applications to their own business. Second, out-of-school skill development may not be much interested among employees who aim to quit jobs some days and turn to be business owner.
